Hard Road by J.B. Turner was a bit of a surprise to me. I was not expecting to like it as much as I did.

The story line—assassin refuses to kill and is now wanted by the very people he worked for—has been done to death. So I picked up the first Jon Reznick book thinking it would be more of the same. But I was pleasantly surprised.

J.B. Turner offers up a fresh new take on the “assassin on the run” story trope, with some edge-of-your-seat action and a few twists you won’t see coming. His writing is sharp and his narrative style keeps you along for the ride. Jon Reznick is one of those good guys you can’t help falling in love with and you keep turning pages to find out how he’ll escape the clutches of the bad guys while keeping the target and his daughter alive in the process. It’s a really well done book that would make a great movie.

Jon Reznick is not perfect, he makes mistakes and he’s a fallible hero, which is just one of the many things I like about Turner’s new series. This is a gritty story with just enough over-the-top action to keep you hooked. It’s a great read and I definitely recommend. J.B. Turner just released a new book in the series, so there’s plenty to binge on if you’re looking for a new read.
