The Tracker and Shadow Sheppard by Chad Zunker
Our next author is the creator of Sam Callahan, a law school student working his way through college as a political tracker. Sam is paid to follow sleazy politicians around in the hopes of catching them in a misstep. He gets more than he bargained for when he witnesses a congressional front runner murder a buxom blonde in a motel room. Now Sam is on the run from federal agents and assassins, trying to clear his own name and uncover a conspiracy that shakes the halls of power in Washington DC.
Zunker’s first book, The Tracker, is a heck of a fun ride. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. The plot is original and the lead character, Sam Callahan, is a fresh departure from the seasoned professionals who usually inhabit the pages of thriller fiction. Sam is a college student with hopes, dreams, and more importantly, guts. Think John Grisham’s The Firm meets Jason Bourne. Sam is the kind of young man you can’t help cheering for. He hasn’t got guns or gadgets, but he has got a lot of street smarts he picked up from a youth spent in the foster care system.

Sam’s very first client is shot to death in a hotel room (remind me not to hire him to represent me.) and Sam barely escapes with his life. He’s on the run, again, and this time Sam’s girlfriend is caught up in the action. Kidnappers give Sam just twenty-four hours to carry out their nefarious orders before they murder his sweetheart.
The second book in the Sam Callahan series is even better than the first. That’s a rare feat. Most authors get a case of sophomore jinx, but Zunker managed to turn in a better, more rounded and well written, tale than the original.
