The War Planners by Andrew Watts

David Manning is part of a top-secret government think tank tasked with drawing up plans for a military invasion. The CIA has credible intel that China is planning to take over the United States. Now Manning, along his fellow war planners, are racing against the clock to figure out China’s plans before they launch a full-scale invasion. But Manning soon begins to suspect that he and his fellow think tank strategists might be unwitting pawns in something much, much bigger.

Settle in for a long night. This is one of those series you dive into and get lost in. When you finish, you come back to real life, wondering what you can possibly read next that will keep you half as enthralled.

At first I was skeptical of Andrew Watts. He was being billed as the next Tom Clancy, and I’ve been a huge admirer of Clancy for years. So I went into The War Planners thinking this Watts fellow would have to work hard to impress me. Watts pulled it off and then some. The story is a slow burn and in a good way. Watts obviously knows his stuff when it comes to the military and war planning. A ton of research went into this book and it shows. The plot is layered and intricate and, if you understand geo-politics, the scenario is frighteningly real. This book will have you believing this could actually happen. And it could. I would love to see these books turned into a Netflix or Amazon miniseries.

What’s more, Watts is a clever author. He drops just enough hints that you begin to suspect the double cross in the works and then you’ll bite your nails waiting for the protagonists to put the puzzle pieces together and turn the tables on their captors. I won’t give anything else away, you’ll have to read it for yourself.
